...to Bear Grylls: a backpack

Be wary of our baggage !

I've been involved in debates that did little but try to position ‘real’ librarians at the centre of the information profession and marginalise everyone else.

I've observed debates bemoaning the fact that we’re stuck with Google, surrounded by individuals who feel empowered in a new world of information ubiquity, creativity and freedom but "really can’t do it as well as we can". (hint: they can do it well enough. That's the real tipping point)

This isn't the way to ensure the survival of the profession. Not the “we know best & no-one ever listens” mantra.

We are in an information age that is never going to go backwards. What we can do is change the way we perceive the present and the future.

We now have massively expanded user group, flush with enthusiasm about the power of information. This is HALF-FULL; not half-empty.

A positive mindset is probably the most powerful survival skill we could have.
